As many readers may be aware, it is International Women's Day, and what better way to celebrate than playing video games that celebrate women! And we at 3Bit have put our brains together to recommend to you five incredible female-led games that you should try out today. Whilst there are a few obvious recommendations that include Crystal Dynamic's Tomb Raider Collection, The Last of Us Part 2 or even the returning legendary series of Mass Effect, we thought we would think a bit more outside of the box and recommend to you five games that you may not have even heard of with strong female leads.

1- Sayonara Wild Hearts

Sayonara Wild Hearts brings Fast-paced Neon Arcade gameplay, an outstanding soundtrack, a surprising guest appearance by Queen Latifah and an underlying story of heartbreak and freedom. In Sayonara Wildhearts, we take on the role of a young woman who has just experienced a devastating heartbreak.  In her heartbreak, the woman loses her harmony. She must recover it by travelling to a parallel universe, where several antagonists based on tarot cards such as The Devil and The Hermit have hidden harmony within their hearts. It is down to the woman to recover these hearts by tackling various situations in a stunning neon world filled with rhythmic gameplay, collecting hearts and taking down those who stole the hearts. Will you be able to regain harmony? Sayonara Wildhearts is easily completable within a day of playing but offers tons of challenges for all players to want to play each level again and again.

2- Raji: An Ancient Epic

Raji: An Ancient Epic takes us somewhere that video games don't explore all that often, India, where we explore the stunning environments and mythos that surround the Indian and Hindu cultures as Raji, a young girl who was orphaned and left to be a circus performer with her brother Golu. One day Golu is snatched from the Circus by servants of the demon lord Mahabalasura. Raji Pursues the kidnappers but loses them during the pursuit. However, during this pursuit, Raji comes face to face with a variety of Hindu Gods. The Gods are able to assist her on her journey by giving her the Divine Trishul, a trident that allows Raji to take on the Demon Kings forces and liberate her brother in this prince of Persia style adventure game.

3- Spiritfarer

In Spiritfarer, we play as Stella, the ferry master to the deceased. In Spiritfarer, we will have to build our boat to transport the recently deceased, who we will meet along our journey as we explore the waters of the afterlife. We will need to meet the recently deceased spirits and befriend them to help them pass into the final stages of the afterlife. As a Spiritfarer, we will also need to farm, craft and create, make each persons passing easier, and ensure we can stay out in the mystical waters for as long as possible, picking up as many people as we can.

4- Roki

Created by British Developers Polygon Treehouse, Roki is an adventure game where we venture into an ancient wilderness as Tove as she explores the ancient forest in the pursuit of her brother. Tove will need to solve a series of puzzles as she finds her way through a living forest, making friends with forgotten monsters and solve riddles as old as the forest. Roki takes a much different approach to many other adventure titles. All of its resolution sections are done without violence and weapons, making this an adventure to be enjoyed by anybody.

5- Half-Life Alyx

Finally, we have one of the most anticipated returns to PC, Half-Life Alyx. Whilst Half Life Alyx is a VR only title. It definitely fits into our recommendations. As you take on the role of Alyx, the titular protagonist works alongside her father in a desperate bid to remove an alien threat. Half-Life Alyx is set between the two incredibly popular Half-Life games and is seen as VR's most successful release, thanks to the intense story and vital gameplay elements, along with the epic returning cast of characters and equipment found in both Half-Life and HalfLife 2.
