As many of you already know, I have an absolute love of Sci-Fi and exploration of new worlds and environments, especially if a game focuses on environmental storytelling and an engaging plot, games like Journey to the Savage Planet and Breathedge. This in turn brings me to an all-new Scifi adventure I cannot wait for called The Gunk, which is coming to PC and Xbox consoles later this month on December 16th!
In The Gunk, you star as one of a pair of space hauliers, Rani, who comes across a planet teeming with life and resources. Naturally, you take your craft down there to discover a broken-down civilisation taken over by a parasitic slime called The Gunk. The slimy Gunk corrupts and takes over all it touches. Thankfully, you have a way through the slime with your trusty and ever so cool looking Power Glove. While the gameplay itself heavily reminds me of Viscera Cleanup Detail, where you go to areas to fight and clean up the corruption, the fact you’re able to not only see your effect but also explore these areas really makes it stand out.
From what we have seen so far in the trailers, the attention to detail, especially in the environment, which for want of a word looks breath-taking, the lush jungle, damp and ominous caves, and even the lost society all look amazing. You clearly see the time the development team have taken on these. The Gunk itself has its own unique viscous look to it, and even the corrupted beings you’ll have to tackle all look weird but very fitting in this alien world. What surprises me in what I’ve read is that there’s no mention of power-ups or upgrades, which you’d come to expect from a game with a device such as a Power Glove. If this is the case, I’d expect you to progress the clearing of the Gunk and get new add ons that way to progress further, but we will have to see.
The fact you’re a part of a duo and your partner keeps in contact with you throughout your adventure will keep the engagement in the plot and what is happening and teach us more about the personalities of our cast. This type of narrative really helps the immersion, especially when you as the player are just as clueless as the character but still want to continue the Journey and experience The Gunk! Be sure to check it out for yourself later this month, on December 16th, where you can pick up The Gunk on the Microsoft Store or via Xbox Game Pass.
