Survival/crafting games are among my favourite types of games that have been massively popular over the last several years. However, recently they seem to be falling out of favour. While everyone has an opinion on it, my thoughts are that many of them lack innovation and are carbon copies of each other. When I saw Breakwaters description, I freely admit I thought the same. That was until I saw the trailer.
Breakwaters is an indie survival crafting game with a focus on water and titans. Water in this game isn’t just to make waves but is an essential feature to be used. To be moved and manipulated to suit your game style, which is both fascinating and exciting to me. You can create valleys from the water or even flood your own island, and the possibilities are mind-boggling. The procedurally generated islands you’ll be exploring will provide a host of ways to go about your day, from farming to adventuring and eventually as a way to gather and refine crystals to deform the ocean revealing the richer resources.
The Titans will be your main antagonist in this game, comprising of three that we know of, The Turtle Titan, who is akin to Godzilla with its intense breath and will cause no end of massive waves to deal with. Secondly, we have The Serpent Titan prefers storms and lives beneath the water, causing whirlpools. Finally, the lesser understood Crab Titan who likes to walk over land to attack you or your buildings. These huge beasts will take a lot of time and understanding to vanquish, but I think the right type of crafting this mammoth task will be manageable.
The emphasis here is on upgrading your boat to ensure you can survive against such massive odds. However, that's not the only way to move around this oceanic world. You can swim and even fly to new islands with unique resources. Tou will also be able to talk and trade with the other inhabitants of this world like fishermen or those visiting the ports. The ocean is a vast environment, and the treacherous waves are not always best travelled alone, which is why Breakwaters also has Online Co-op support so you and a friend can venture together to see if you can finally bring one of those Titans down. Breakwaters is available now in early access. Will you be joining me in an adventure across the water world?
