In the small hours of today there were reports of EA swooping in to outbid Take Two Interactive for the acquisition of Codemasters, a UK Racing developing giant responsible for the Formula 1, Dirt, Grid and Project Cars IPs. EA is set to acquire Codemasters for $1.2 Billion US (£895 million based on current currency convertors). Thanks to Gamesindustry.Biz who got the initial scoop on this story, we were able to learn that the acquisition will complete in the first quarter of 2021, meaning there is still time for other bids to come in and take Codemasters from EA’s hands. Both EA and Codemasters share the same goal when it comes to racing, and that is to become the world’s lead in racing games, something that will barely become a challenge for both giants if the acquisition goes through, as another other lead Racing developer, Criterion Games is also an EA acquisition, creating great series’ such as Need For Speed and Burnout. With both major British Games Developers under their belt EA would have little to no competition left in the gaming world for racing games, especially after Codemasters recent winning of the WRC contract for 2023, which until then will be continued by French Developers Kylotonn. Personally I am nervous for this acquisition, as Codemasters are well known for bringing the most immersive experiences possible to gaming continually improving their formula and bringing innovation to the racing world. Whilst EA have a well-known track record for “copy, paste” games, that see little to no innovation and new features with each year. The acquisition is most likely a part of EA’s growth to bring 10 new annual sports games into the market and if successful will account for not just Formula One as a title, but WRC. If EA are successful in the Acquisition of Codemasters could this turn the innovative simulators into simplistic and repetitive games with little to no growth?
