So after a hectic week in my personal life, I ended up going to the Telford Wales Comicon, where I got to meet my personal heroes of Doctor Who and admired the weird and wonderful cosplay in action. Whilst there, I became distracted by a very colourful display running a trailer for an upcoming game, known simply as Arcade Tycoon. Now I love a good tycoon game, but when you go as meta as games in a game, I love it more. I was intrigued enough to talk to the owner of the display, who introduced me to the Arcade Tycoon Developers, where I then got the opportunity to check out the game for myself in more detail and even got to stream this awesome game recently on my personal twitch channel (Silverlance24).

Arcade Tycoon sets you up as an owner of your very own Arcade with the lofty goal of building an empire and ensuring it remains profitable and enticing to the general public. Unlike other Tycoon/Simulator type games that have recently been coming out on Steam, this one sticks to more retro-styled graphics with a focus on humour and management. The focus on the retro-inspired graphics not only is very much in keeping with the almost 80s style idea of an arcade, but equally the bold colours really help focus your attention on everything that is going on, from the arcade machines themselves to the decorations and unique characters who pop into your Arcade.

The gameplay itself is fairly straightforward. Select what you want to buy and throw it down. However, it constantly comes with a trade-off, whether money or power. Yes, electricity is a resource you need to manage. That alongside every piece of machinery can be further customised to suit your needs. You can make Arcades easier to win at or cost more. What I did was both make it easier but cost more where the less expensive games are harder (yes, I know, I’m mean). That’s not where the customisation stops, as you can change the floors, walls and even add plants and a Llama. It’s not all fun, though as you also need to ensure your machines are upgraded to stop them blowing up. No, I didn’t mistype that. The machines will blow up, so you’ll also need to make sure you have staff on-site to keep the machines in working order, which again comes at the price of money and making sure all your staff are catered for.

From my experience and the Mostly Positive Reviews showing on Steam, this game is stupidly fun and seriously addictive, especially for those who like to min-max play to get the most out of every customer who visits. However, what I found particularly difficult was after the Tutorial. It was extremely hands-off, which I normally approve of until a guy came into my Arcade and systemically broke every machine I had! I think for someone like me, I would have preferred a longer tutorial to explain the mechanics from the use of security guards to entertainers however, trial and error will make sure you learn. Arcade Tycoon is out now on PC but my question to you guys, when was the last time you went to Arcade? Comment down below and let us know.
