Today Nintendo treated us to a trip to the Tree House, where we were given a fresh look at Paper Mario: The Origami King and an all-new game for developers WayForward. If you haven’t seen it already, you can watch the full video above, and check out our breakdown of everything that took place below.

As the show began we got to see new gameplay from Paper Mario: The Origami King. This exciting new addition to the Paper Mario series is looking spectacular and today we got to see an in-depth look not just of the world we get to explore in paper Mario but also of the all-new combat system, which adds a new puzzle element to Paper Mario. During combat Mario is surrounded by a series of rings which house his adversaries, Mario must first move these rngs to align his enemies and then make his attack. Solving the puzzle before you attack will grant you bonus damage, allowing for some fights to end relatively quickly. If you are struggling in a fight then fear not as the combat system will allow you to utilise your coins to either extend your time limit or even bring in a group of toads that are sitting in the audience to assist you, by either guiding you in the puzzle, damaging enemies or healing Mario. The toads may even do all of the above as they help you. Bosses in paper Mario, however, will bring a twist to this new combat system, where Mario is no longer in the centre of the ring, but on the edge, and must plan his route to the boss in the centre, using the right tile to make the best attack on the boss. In the video, we got to see one of the earlier bosses in Origami King and that is Coloured Pencils. This box of pencils is guarding one of the many streamers that have encased Princess Peach’s castle. It is the obscurity of using a box of pencils as a missile launching boss that makes us love the Paper Mario series and we cannot wait to explore the 2.5D Mushroom Kingdom as Paper Mario in this free-roam adventure when it releases on July 17th.

After a short break, we got to see Nintendo’s second announcement. Developed by WayForward, Bakugan Champions of Vestroia is a whole new Nintendo Switch exclusive that will bring a whole new story that ties in with the TV show. This new RPG will see us collecting up to 81 Bakugan and battling them both in the games all-new story, but also online in some intense turn-based fights. Combat in Bakugan is turn-based, where you will run around you giant monsters gathering energy (Bakucores) to ensure your Bakugan can charge his abilities and make powerful attacks. When it comes to scaling Bakugan Champions of Vestroi boasts that it is incredibly true to the show, where the creatures are as tall as buildings, giving the game potential for some extremely devastating moments. You can catch Bakugan Champions of Vestroia this November and I am sure we will see more from this hit anime video game very soon.
