I looked through my gaming roster recently and realised I have many great Indie games published by the same people, tinyBuild. They’ve published a great number of awesome Indie games, including the Secret Neighbour series, Clustertruck, Guts and Glory, Graveyard Keeper. Now they’re bringing us Quarter Circle Games’ Once upon a time in Roswell. While we haven’t heard much from the developers since their PAX reveal trailer in 2019, this Psychological horror game intends to be released at the end of this year, and I think it may just scratch that horror itch.
Psychological horror games now come in many different guises, from feeling isolated and overwhelmed, such as in Amnesia or Silent Hill, to praying within your own mind and scaring your memories like the PT and Hellblade approach. Once Upon a Time in Roswell seems to be latter where you, as a Detective, need to investigate the disappearance of a family in the Roswell area in 1947, reliving memories of war all while traversing an ever-changing house and yes, even a hint of those little green men and flying saucers.
The mature approach to reliving memories and identity could provide a very intense and overwhelming feeling of dread. From what we’ve seen, the added confusion of where you are and what you’re doing will definitely amplify that unease. It looks like we’re going to be taking the stealth approach to the weird and wonderful threats on offer here with a focus on survival rather than a run and gun. Yet you are a detective, so rummaging through these memories does have a point, its necessary for your ongoing investigation finding and adding evidence to explain the story of the missing family and maybe even explain what exactly is going on.
The visuals on offer here are stir feelings designed to make you feel uncomfortable and yet contrasted brilliantly with beautiful scenic images such as the streets of Paris. We don’t have an exact date for release on this title yet, but it should be with us before the end of the year on PC with the hope this will also be released on PS4 and Xbox One.
