As the Opening Night for Gamescom began to draw to a close we were given another sneak peek into the world of PlayStation 5 through Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. During Gamescom Geoff Keighley presented us the full demo and cinematic that was partially shown off during PlayStation’s State of Play, that was broadcast back in July. With the demo in full swing, we got to see Ratchet and Clank fight a variety of enemies, some old, some new, along with some incredible new guns that will play hand in hand with the all-new PlayStation 5 Controller. The Story of Rift Apart centres on the return of Dr Nefarious, a well-known villain in the Ratchet and Clank universe, as he tries to bring chaos to the universe again using his all-new Dimensionator. In a typical Ratchet and Clank way, the Dimensionator is Damaged and tears numerous holes throughout the universe. These holes begin sucking in random civilians and spit out some very out of place enemies, including Sand Sharks, Robomutts and even a giant robot. As our heroic Duo chase down Dr Nefarious, they realise that they can pull some of these rifts to them, with a new gadget glove Ratchet has obtained. These rifts enable ratchet to flank enemies, move closer without taking damage and even reach impossible to reach locations for a new perspective of the battle. The rifts are made possible thanks to how fast the PlayStation 5 is alleged to be with its SSD hard Drives, meaning that the entire game will be seamless as we jump rift to rift and level to level.
As we mentioned before we will be seeing an all-new arsenal in Ratchet and Clank Rift apart and from the brief Demo we saw, we here at 3-Bit cannot wait to get stuck in and try them all for ourselves. During an interview after the show, Geoff Keighley and his guests Marcus Smith and Mike Daily of Insomniac Games discussed how the haptic feedback on the controllers will give each weapon its own unique feel. Along with how each weapon feels from the rumble you will also be able to use each weapon differently based on how much pressure you apply to the trigger, for example with the new shotgun, The Decimator we will be able to fire a single shot with a half pulled trigger, whilst pulling the trigger all the way will allow us to use both barrels and cause devastating damage.
Unfortunately, even with subtitles being enabled throughout the gameplay demo we did not learn the identity of our new playable character, the mysterious female Lombax. When asked about it in the interview both Mark and Mike agreed that she was to remain a mystery and we most likely will not find out until the game launches, which will be close to the release date of the PlayStation 5 this Holiday Season.
