The World of Darkness is expanding this October, with Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart of the forest which launches later today on PC, Mac and Linux. For those of you unaware, the World of Darkness is a joint universe which features both Vampire the Masquerade and Werewolf: The apocalypse franchises, both of which originated as table top games, before becoming video game franchises. Heart of the Forest is developed by Indie Developers Different Tales, which was founded by The Witcher developers Jackek Brzezinski and Artur Ganszyniec. Hearts of the Forest is the first of 2 planned Video games to release under the Werewolf: The Apocalypse banner and will tell the story of Maia Boroditch, an American of Polish descent, who heads back to her families hometown of Bialowieza, Poland, in order to learn her primal roots after a series of reoccurring nightmares of wolves in the towns forest. The games story will feature themes of Activism and Global Warming, and I personally think we may even see some story elements from the cancelled 1999 title Werewolf the Apocalypse: Heart of Gaia, due to the similarities in their title (Gaia being the personification of earth and nature).

Hearts of the Forest is a text-based adventure filled with written narrative and decision making that will ultimately shape the story, as well as Maia’s personality and actions. The core gameplay is slated to play out much like the classic table top game, with RPG mechanics. This means that as we carve out Maia’s path through our decisions and actions, other characters and the available interactions toward them can change, leading to multiple ways to complete this introduction to the Werewolf world. Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart of the forest seems like it could be the perfect way to introduce the Werewolf lore to new gamers, especially with the upcoming release of Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood next February, which will play more as an Action RPG title.
