#EAGate is currently Trending on Twitter, but what does it all mean?
#EAgate is the call to action made by fans and critics alike for FIFA Ultimate Team, EA's "surprise mechanic" game-mode found in all FIFA titles since 2015. The hashtag started due to players allegedly being able to purchase rare Ulitmate Team cards, known as Prime Icon Moments, directly from EA employees. The evidence of such is being done through screenshotted conversations on private messenger apps such as WhatsApp and Messenger, where players are being charged in euros, varying from €1000 up to €2000 for 2-3 Icon Moments. Sellers are seemingly claiming they know a person in EA, which is why they can guarantee these cards, where all they require is a user name. Once the payment is transferred, they can then access whatever moment it was they requested. Naturally, this can, in turn, lead to a lot of other dangerous ventures for fans desperate to acquire individual cards, making many players of all ages vulnerable to scams that are also cropping up amidst the "genuine" sales.
Today EA has commented on the spiralling situation and stated:
"We are aware of the allegations currently circulating within our community related to FIFA 21 Ultimate Team items. A thorough investigation is underway, and if we identify improper conduct, we will take swift action. We want to be clear, this type of behaviour is unacceptable, and we in no way condone what is alleged to have happened here. We understand how this creates concern about unfair balance in the game and competition. We will update the community as we get more clarity on the situation."
