Lone Fungus is an indie Metroidvania game with style and substance. The developer Basti, has been working on this project for the last year and a half, and is at a stage where he is ready to get the game fully funded for a full release. Lone Fungus is a platformer that is deserving of fans time, directly comparing to great Metroidvania titles before it such as Hollow Knight and/or the popular Ori series. Check out more about the game below, and watch the trailer above for more information.

The Story of Lone Fungus:

Lone Fungus is a game in which you play as the last mushroom, a race of intelligent mushroom’s which built the world in which you reside. With this theme of extinction, developer Basti has set to tell players a story about loneliness and perseverance. It’s your job as Greencap to search for the answer to what happened to the Mushroom race, how they built this world, and what your role is in this big grand world.

The story is told through the environment in Lone Fungus, with a few tips from the limited lifeforms you can talk to along your way. This is the formula that has become a more frequent vehicle of storytelling made popular by the hit ‘Souls-bourne’ series. The past and present of Lone Fungus holds remnants infused with magic, which allow the events of the story to be told by these lifeforms. But as you progress through the game there will be able to give you more information and secrets to help grow your understanding of the events, always giving you a reason to retrace your steps.

Greencap Combat:

The combat in Lone Fungus is an interesting mix of simple platformer hack and slash and skill-based dodge and parry counters. These combined is not a new mixture in gaming, but does make for some of the best 2D combat in platformers - Think Hollow Knight and you’re on the right tracks. The movement is smooth and precise, using a sword as a main attack throughout the game. Although, as player progress through the game, their arsenal WILL grow, giving players more and more freedom to tackle combat elements differently in the later game.

Although, let’s talk about the spells! Spells are an extension to Greencaps sword, meaning that just simply casting a spell, initially comes across as weak and pointless. What’s key here is that spells react to how you swing your sword at them, with all spells reacting differently to being hit. What’s even better here is the fact that spells aren’t just used for combat either. In fact, if you get good enough, you can use spells to navigate the world better, getting you to hard to reach areas and into secrets.

Here are the key features which you will find in Lone Fungus:

  • Explore 13 unique areas in a handcrafted world set in a world built by ancient mushrooms.

  • Fast and responsive combat, play as an acrobatic mushroom!

  • A spell-system based on how you strike spells with your sword, giving spells multiple uses and a creative approach to combat.

  • 60+ relics and 15+ unlockable abilities!

  • Unique and challenging platforming gameplay reminiscent of modern platformers such as Celeste but set in a fully open world.

  • True Metroidvania progression, this game is all about progressing using new abilities and spells.

  • Uncover clues to what happened to the different mushroom cultures and uncover many secrets.

  • Play the game how you want! Pick between four difficulty modes or use the accessible Assist Mode!

Supporting Lone Fungus:

Lone Fungus is being developed primarily by 1 person, Sebastian aka Basti. Basti is a passionate developer who has been working with the idea of this game since December 2019, where he started to run with the concept of this title and make it a reality. Basti is currently available on Kickstarter, with the hope of getting funding for Basti to work on and make this title a reality. Here’s something that Basti has said on his Kickstarter page:

“I've often wanted to do a full game but I thought it felt too hard or that it was not possible, but now I feel I can really do this. I decided I really wanted to make a Metroidvania game in the style of Hollow Knight but with more platforming and some unique mechanics and I have not stopped since then. I believe I've made great progress and I feel like I know what I want to do with my life now.”

Honestly, Lone Fungus looks like an incredible game in its alpha state with a lot of potential to grow. We would suggest that before you back the campaign, have a go at the demo and have a feel for it yourself. If you like what you played, then be sure to back this project as it’s not a game you are going to want to miss.

This demo is still a prototype and a small portion of the Alpha version of the game. The Demo contains the first area in the game, which has 2 bosses and a couple of upgrades. It's a small slice of the early part of the game and does not have many upgrades but it lets you try how the game plays.
