3Bits Indie Highlights Part 3

The holidays are finally upon us, which means that we are at the end of our Indie Highlights 2020. We have seen a lot of great indie announcements this year. As an avid fan of the indie community, I believe it important to bring a spotlight to these innovative, exciting and original games. So be sure to check out our last 10 Indie highlights of 2020, maybe you will find your next adventure to bring you into 2021.

Hypnospace Outlaw

Have you ever wanted to police the internet? Well with Hypnospace Outlaw that dream can now become a reality. Take a step back into the 90s with a classic style internet browser. Search through early social media models, fan sites and forums banning and moderating users who are breaking laws, harassing other users and anything in between. But this is not al you will discover in Hypnospace Outlaw, as the fun trip back into the '90s will quickly turn into the chilling reality of today, with mass surveillance and censorship becoming the key theme. Will you save the internet? Hypnospace Outlaw released last year for PC but released earlier this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Omori

Surreal hand-drawn worlds, Creepy colourful characters and a lot of choices that will shape your fate and the fate of others. Omori follows out titular character Omori, who has been living in the white space, a cold wall-less room, with the bare minimum needed to survive. Occasionally a door will present itself which will take Omori to a colourful world with just as colourful characters and adventures galore. For Omori the story is already over, he only has to remember it, so how will you remember your adventures? Omori releases on PC on Christmas Day and will also be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch at an unspecified date.

Maid of Sker

Another Indie title that is a bit closer to home has made it onto our list, Maid of Sker, by Wales Interactive. Maid of Sker is a new horror title focussed around Welsh. Taking the player back to 1898, Maid of Sker will bring a story of a family driven by torture, slavery, piracy and the supernatural. A mysterious hotel sets the scene for our player as we try to discover the secrets within. Maid of Sker will arm players with a sound device which will work as your only defence meaning that stealth will be your only option as you evade death and a "cult of sound-based enemies". Maid of Sker is out now PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Spiritfarer

When somebody says management sim as a genre, it doesn't necessarily spark inspiration or screams thought-provoking storytelling, But Spiritfarer by Thunderlotus Games does precisely that. Spiritfarer explores the world of death and moving on to the next life, as we help people cross over to the other side. Whilst we help people cross over to the other side, we can explore the waters, upgrade our ship, gather and grow our resources for crafting all whilst jumping and dashing through a series of incredible platforming levels in a stunning hand-drawn world. Spiritfarer is out now on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Mac, Linux and Google Stadia.

Spelunky 2

Spelunky is back and more formidable than ever. The sequel to the popular roguelike will take players to the moon, on the hunt for treasures, and a missing family. Spelunky 2 is filled with random challenges, much like the original Spelunky, and builds on them to bring this 2d platformer to the next level. Of course, it's not a sequel without more content, and Spelunky 2 gets exactly that. Spelumky 2 offers more characters, levels, traps and items than his predecessor, along with lots of new ways to interact with them. Spelunky 2 also gets a lot of new features such as branching paths and levels that are layered to add a third dimension to the classic gameplay. Spelunky 2 is out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It will also be coming to Nintendo Switch in 2021.

Cyber Shadow

Synthetic life forms have taken over Earth, and humanity is getting desperate. In Cyber shadow, we will play as the last hope for Humanity, Shadow. Shadow is a Ninja from Meka City, ground zero to the Synthetic scourge and techno legions that are spreading across the world. Shadow will need to return to Meka City and will need to hack and slash his way through hordes of enemies, rescuing his former clan members and saving humanity. Cyber Shadow is brought to life by its 8-Bit art style, with modern features to bring Cyber Shadow into the modern world of gaming. Cyber shadow releases on January 26th 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Hades

Hades is undoubtedly the peoples choice for indie game of the year and went on to prove that at this years Game Awards, where it not only won Best Action and Best Indie but was also a nominee for Game of the Year. Created by Supergiant Game, Hades explores the life of Zagreus in a roguelike adventure like no other. Zagreus will need to escape his father, Hades' clutches in the underworld and make his way to Mount Olympus, but will Zagreus ever be able to escape the underworld? Hades is out now on Nintendo Switch and PC, Have you played this epic hack and slash game yet?

Phogs!

What is better than one dog? Two dogs! Phogs gives you exactly that, but not how you would think. Your two dogs are conjoined, and each dogs head is controlled by either yourself or one other player in this hilarious puzzle game that will keep you (and your co-op partner) entertained for hours on end, thanks to Phogs' colourful art design and unique gameplay mechanics that will make you a true believer in the phrase "Two heads are better than one". Phogs is out now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC.

Iron Harvest

From indie developers, King Art Games comes an incredible entry to the Real-Time Strategy Genre, Iron Harvest. Set in a dieselpunk 1920s where the people of Polania are surrounded and caught in the middle of the warring Rusviet and Saxony armies. The war machines have quite literally sprung to life in this title as giant Mechas push the frontlines tearing up the Polanian homeland. With Iron Harvest, you will be able to play as all three factions and take in the perspective of the war from both warring sections and from those stuck in the middle who only wish for peace and serenity in their country. Iron Harvest is now available on PC and will also be available on PlayStation and Xbox consoles soon!

From Team 17 the creators of the incredible Worms games and other great Indies comes The Survivalist, an all-new solo or co-op survival adventure game. Explore an island filled with secrets as you hunt, craft, build and most importantly survive in this vast pixelated and procedurally generated world filled with mythical enemies, dangerous animals and a mysterious stranger. Every playthrough is unique to each player, and each adventure is as impressive as the last. The Survivalist is out now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Oh, and did we mention that you can make friends with the monkeys.
